Many preachers prefer the pulpit plate to be wide enough. This means you can lay an A4 notebook down and find space for a bible next to it. Of course, it's also good for a minimalistic iPad using a preacher.

Plus, you can stack the bible and notes. The top corner is specially designed so that a leather-covered bible does not slip towards the lip. Many preachers will push a bible to the top edge of the pulpit top and have their notes closer to them, resting on the lip.

It's always handy for the preacher to have a bottle or glass water nearby, within easy reach. Or they may have extra books and accessories they'd like to have close at hand, but don't want to clutter up the lectern. Some preachers like to place the table to the side of the stage, so that when walking and talking, they can walk to the water table and back to the pulpit.

The table is also useful for d other service styles. For example, a seated sharing session, where there are several sofas or chairs and the table in the middle. Some churches set the table on the dais while there are announcements or introductions, then the church pulpit is kept for the main speaker only. This is a sort of indication that the sermon is about to begin.
